I didn’t go to any interesting (local) exhibitions, but i would like to share some thoughts regarding Don Ritters Vox Populi.
Everyone in the class saw the presentation, so i won’t formally describe it.I have never (directly) experienced the installation, but something about it is very familiar in an unnerving way. Actually, the more i think about the more unerving it becomes. Its spooky stuff, as you can probably see yourself amidst the cheering/rabbling people on the screen, subjects or indicators in a game of manipulation. Don states that the piece is supposed to make you think about ’who controls who’ during a speaking performance. Its a balancing act that ideally gives both sides what they want. I thought it was strange that Don, when asked for his explanation regarding the critical nature of the piece, quickly made his detachment clear. He leaves it up to us to decide whether or not there is a broader statement or implication being made. Among many possibilities, you could say that the piece is a critique of 1 sided performances, if you see it as a game. The objective is to win over the audiences confidence, by acting like you know what they think they want. A good speech caters to many desires. A spectacle is any one sided non-participatory performance, that absorbs your attention from immediate reality to non-reality. To some this can be seen as a violation. Assuming its safe to say that the performer knows what they are doing, they will consistently acquire peoples attention, and give them a particular acceptable/desirable alternate reality. This can be dangerous, because people frequently make decisions based on non-reality, which further complicates and distorts what is perceived as desirable, which is what performers adjust to satisfy. The artist falls within the realm of performer, some with bigger audiences than others. Illusions and artists are like peas in a pod, which makes this piece very challenging, in that it reveals an illusion, within an illusion (within an illusion). I suppose it was a smart thing for Don to not imply anything much further than what is immediately apparent to avoid this paradoxical headache.
Don’t make any decisions based on this spectacle.
